The BLACKROLL® material: What is our foam roller actually made of?

The BLACKROLL® material: What is our foam roller actually made of?

EPP is short for "expanded polypropylene." I will explain everything you need to know about this material, which is used to make Blackroll's fascia products.
Expanded polypropylene is a thermoplastic foam that provides for outstanding structural strength at an extremely light weight. That sounds quite technical, but it's not that complicated. First of all, it can be said, that EPP is virtually unbreakable and rarely loses its shape. Blackroll develops products with different levels of hardness to achieve optimal results while massaging the fascia. They work closely with doctors, scientists, and athletes to maximize the performance - and your enjoyment.
EPP-based products are 100% recyclable. This means they can be reconverted into raw materials for reuse. However, it usually takes a long time for EPP components to reach the end of their life cycle. And when they do, there are collection and recycling systems that send the components to materials recovery facilities.
100% EPP products can be:
  • cleaned with soap and water;
  • cleaned with everyday disinfectant cleaners;
  • and even thrown in the dishwasher as the material retains its shape at temperatures of up to 110°C (230°F).
Pretty cool, right?
EPP is free of chemical blowing agents and propellants. As a result, the material is extremely environmentally friendly. By the way, EPP is also used in medicine, the food sector, and the automotive industry. The foam consists of 96% air!
EPP is light as a feather. You can therefore take our fascia tools with you everywhere.

EPP is a byproduct of petroleum extraction. Blackroll purchases EPP as small beads from leading global manufacturers who produce the material in Europe. Petroleum is used sparingly during the production of the material, as EPP consists mostly of air (to be precise, 96% of EPP is air). Production processes only make use of steam and pressure, which allow for the increase in temperature that is required to fuse the EPP beads together. No adhesives are used whatsoever. Even the cooling water is cleaned and recycled without chemicals. Energy efficiency is not only taken into account in the use of water, but also in the production of steam.
Blackroll chooses EPP because:
  • it is durable, shape-retaining, and of the highest quality;
  • it is 100% recyclable and can therefore be fully reconverted into raw materials;
  • it meets high standards in terms of product use and performance.
Keep Rolling!
